From this week’s edition of Kosher Today comes this timely and important article:
Fear of Matzoh Shortages this Passover Abate
New York… Soon after the sale of R.A.B. Foods became public, industry sources were predicting a Matzoh shortage this coming Passover. There were rumors that a newly constructed Matzoh operation in the R.A.B. Newark plant was having serious problems, raising fear that the Manischewitz Matzohs would not be available this Passover. But KosherToday has learned that the production issues have been resolved. As Jews prepare to celebrate Chanukah, the production of the Passover Matzoh in many parts of the world is already underway. Manischewitz is the largest brand of Matzohs sold in the U.S. with Streit’s being second. Last Passover, a record amount of Israeli Matzohs were sold in this country setting off a fierce competition between the domestic brands and the Israeli imports. Such well-known brands as Matzot Aviv, Matzot Yehuda, Osem and Matzot Rishon Lezion were on supermarket shelves as were a number of other private label Israeli Matzohs. In addition, Rakusen, a brand made in the UK, was also a popular brand in some markets. Supermarket sources say that the machine-made matzoh can also expect greater competition from manufacturers of hand-made matzoh from the U.S. and Israel. But for the moment fears of any Matzoh shortages appear to have been premature.
