The OU here in Israel published a list of fruits that require a shehecheyanu (sic) when first eaten in their season. We looked at the list and were amazed. Here is a list of all the fruit we had to look up. Now you won’t have to!
Peruvian Apple Cactus is related to Dragon Fruit. It tastes like sugar cane
Acerola is also known as Barbados Cherries. Tastes like cherries.
Black Sapote is also called the Chocolate Pudding Fruit. It is part of the persimmon family.
Canistel is a round fruit that is very dry inside and tastes musky.
Durian is a weird fruit. It is savory, sweet, and creamy. Some say it tastes like diced garlic mixed with whipped cream. Others say it tastes like chives mixed with sugar. (We don’t expect to try this one.)
Feijoa looks like a big lime. It tastes like a mix of strawberry, pineapple, and guava.
Loquat tastes like a mix of apricot, plum, and cherry.
Purple Mangosteen tastes like a mix of strawberry, peach, and vanilla ice cream.
Marula is sweet and sour. Rumor has it that elephants get drunk from eating fermented marula fruit on the ground. (We did not make this up. But it is a rumor only.)
Sweetsop aka Custard Apple But it tastes like pineapple.
Last but not least is our favorite: Rambutan In the Malay language, rambutan comes from the word for “hairy.” When you see the fruit, you will know why! By the way, not only is it hairy, but it is a gingi! Tastes like a sweet and sour grape.
