LETTERS, WE GET LETTERS…

One of the most common questions we receive (usually via email) concerns finding a dairy spoon in the meat silverware drawer (or vice versa). What to do, what to do?

Simple solution: take it out of the meat drawer and put it back in the dairy drawer. You can use it immediately. (Rema on YD 95:3)

Does Corning Ware Corelle need tvilah?

According to the halacha, the following things need tvillah (immersion): gold, silver, copper, iron, tin and lead. The Rabbis extended the requirement to include glass. Although Corning Ware is not exactly glass, the Rabbis overwhelmingly agree that it needs tvillah.

More than once we have received letters from people who say that well meaning friends have told them that they may not put meat and dairy on the same shelf of the refrigerator. Is that true?

Nope. Not true. But, be careful about what you put UNDERNEATH stuff in the fridge. You don’t want that leaky bottle of milk to drip onto your nice, expensive roast beast! (Beit Yosef on YD 88:1)

One of our favorite questions concerns tasting while cooking. People often ask if they can taste but not swallow. The question is whether they can do that and not be “fleishiq” for example.

That’s a big negatory there, big fellow. No way, Josefina! Nope. Nada.

If you taste meat foods, you are fleishiq and have to wait the requisite number of hours before you can put milk in your coffee. For people who like to taste while they cook, cooking early in the morning before you go to work may not be the optimum time! Or, drink that coffee black when you get to the office. (Beit Yosef YD 89:1)
