By now, everyone knows that Norman’s Steak and Burger is owned by the very beautiful, talented and witty Robin Blank. She is the new(so to speak) Norman, of Norman’s. We went to see Robin and to enjoy her hospitality on Weds. night. We had a blast.
We started with the American appetizer plate: onion rings, meat balls, chicken fingers, and chicken wings. The sauce in the plate was a smokey BBQ sauce that lent a nice accent to it all. Frankly, the plate was big enough to be dinner by itself, but for the three of us, it was a wonderful appetizer.
We had our usual Jeff’s Slam Dunk Burger – a huge piece of meat smothered in onions and shrooms, covered with slices of entrecote. It was perfect! Tali had a chicken dish that she proclaimed to be excellent.
So what about Yoav, our favorite son in law? Well, for starters, Yoav is nowhere near as large as your favorite writer. Yoav is a slender, good looking fellow, whose easy going nature belies his gustatory abilities.
Yoav ordered the SUMO BURGER- a whopping kilogram of meat. Yes, that is a 2.2 pound burger. The roll itself is huge! If you finish the Sumo burger, you get your name in a book and you get a free tee shirt. There was no pressure. We simply told Yoav that we would not leave the place until he finished. Midway, he announced that he was observing a seventh inning stretch. We worried- was this a prelude to declaring defeat?? We told Tali to get in there and massage his shoulders, to rub his cheeks and throat. What would the denoument be- the thrill of victory or the agony of the stomach?
Within minutes of our finishing our Jerry burger, Yoav put down his fork and declared victory!! Alas, no light bulbs flashed, no press gathered, no one even stood up and cheered. Tali and I sang a few bars of siman tov v’mazal tov, and that was it. He got to sign the book and he got his shirt.
Along the way, by the way, we enjoyed a great bottle of dry pomegranite wine. The wine was young and had a bit of a subtle bite to it. But, it was quite tasty.
Robin stopped by the table and we got to schmooze for a bit. She watched Yoav as he slowly worked his way through the Sumo burger. She offered words of support as well as a big smile. It has to help when the boss stops by to offer support, right?
We had a blast and finally left at almost 11:00pm- stuffed to the gills and very, very satisfied.
Norman’s is at 27 Emek Refaim, in J’lem.
