FROM FAILED MESSIAH
At least 10 Jerusalem restaurants, fed up with what they say are ever-increasing demands made by Israel’s official state Rabbinate kosher supervision, have dropped the Rabbinate’s supervision, kicked out the rabbis and gone it on their own, serving kosher food with no supervision other than the good names of the restaurant owners. The Rabbinate is threatening to sue these restaurant owners and force them through large fines to take the Rabbinate’s supervision back or to stop calling their restaurants kosher – even though Jewish law allows self-supervision under some circumstances. But the Rabbinate claims to have a copyright on the word “kosher.”
In response, a kosher seal has been proposed to these renegade restaurant owners.
It is unclear if any of the restaurants involved have adopted the seal yet. It reads, “100% No Fear of Rabbinate. Private Hashgacha (supervision)”:
