Health and Gourmet Items Lead Unprecedented Number of New 2008 Passover Items
New York… by Eda Kram… The galaxy of new products for this coming Passover (eve of April 19 – April 27) spans almost every food category, but health and gourmet dominate at least 300 new entries that will be on supermarket shelves in less than two months. Israeli Matzoh manufacturers will be showcasing their new packaging with holiday related art themes. Reisman’s Bakery will for the first time introduce a new line of kosher for Passover cakes. As has become customary in recent years, many new kosher wines will be introduced as well. Although not a complete list, the annual KosherToday survey, by category, covers a broad list of products:
FOODS
In foods, Delis all natural apple sauce in a pouch (Rue Lafayette); 10 flavors of Sorbet that is free of lactose, gluten, egg, cholesterol soy, and coloring-free (Sumsum – Health From Nature); all natural beef without hormones, antibiotics or implants (Alony Glatt); Sushi dessert and Marzipan (Shabtai Gourmet); extra virgin olive oil produced by cold press and not by chemicals in Israel (Pereg Gourmet); a half-dozen all natural flavored preserves (Oxygen Imports); Savion Beef Flavored Gravy & Poultry Flavored Gravy (Kedem Food Products International); resalable canister for Family Size Matzo Ball Mix (R.A.B. Foods); a new tin decorated with a piece of art by Menashe Kadishman (Matzot Aviv); Yehuda Bran Light Matzos and Savion Matzos with garlic flavor (Kedem Food Group International); art by Rita Sadowsky on redesigned Matzoh packages (Osem); Rejwan 100% Turkish coffee, Hi Café 100% Freeze Dried Instant Coffee, Kinneret Haroset, Kinneret Silan – Date Honey, Kinneret, Silan – Natural Date Syrup, Kinneret Date spread, Lin’s Farm Pure Jerusalem Honey, Lin’s Farm, and Wild Flower Organic Honey (Oxygen Imports); and Ora’s Organics, a new organic tea line from Israel (Osem).
SWEETS
In the sweets department: Gedilla ‘Lay-Down’ and ‘Peg-Board’ lollypops and winkies, Alprose chocolate bars (R.A.B. Foods), Savion Chocolate Cake Mix, Non-Dairy (Pareve) Coffee creamer (Kedem Food Group International); 20 pastry items for the first time in 50 years (Reismans Bakery); Rademaker Dutch processed, unsweetened cocoa (Dorval Trading Co); and frozen desserts like Chocolate Covered Ice Cream Sorbet Ball (Elegant Dessert by Metro).
WINES
In wines, the Royal Wine Company/Kedem released its ‘Top Ten’ new wines for Passover: Casa da Corca Reserve 2005 (Portugal), Herzog Reserve Cab ’05 (California), Baron Rothschild Haute Medoc 2003 (France), Goose Bay-Chardonnay 2006 (New Zealand), Psagot Merlot 2004 (Israel), Barkan Reserve Shiraz ’05 (Israel), Barkan Tempranillo 2005 (Israel), Carmel Sha’al LH Gewürztraminer 2005 (Israel), Binyamina Yogev Cab-Merlot 2005 (Israel), and Sforno Pinot Grigio 2006 (Italy).
Golan Heights and Galil Mountain Wineries are introducing 2004 Yarden Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005 Yarden Chardonnay, 2007 Golan Moscato, Galil Mountain Yiron 2004, Galil Mountain Shiraz 2006 and the Galil Mountain Viognier 2006 (Yarden). From Five Stones winery from the famous Margaret River in Australia come several new wines for Passover, including the Borgo Reale Pinot Grigio, Dalton Alma from the famed Dalton winery in the upper Galilee region, Pinot Grigio delle Venezie 2007, Cabernet Sauvignon – Merlot, Beckett’s Flat ‘Five Stones’ Shiraz 2006, Flat ‘Five Stones’ Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2006, Flat ‘Five Stones’, Chardonnay 2007, Flat ‘Five Stones’ 2007 Sauvignon Blanc-Semillon, and Flat ‘Five Stones’ 2007 Rosé (Allied Importers USA Ltd); Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz, Tabor Mes’cha – Red Dessert 2003, Adama Chalk Soil Merlot, Galil Cabernet Sauvignon, Adama Terra, the Rosa Cabernet Sauvignon (Tabor Winery-Kfar Tabor); dessert wines (Rimon Winery).
