U. S. DEPT OF AGRICULTURE PROPOSES NEW LABELING LAWS FOR MEAT AND POULTRY PRODUCTS

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has proposed updates to nutrition labeling regulations for meat and poultry products. The regulations are meant to parallel USDA’s new nutrition labeling laws for other food products. FSIS is seeking public comment for 60 days.

Some of the proposed changes include: updating the list of nutrients that are required to be declared, providing Daily Reference Values and Reference Daily Intake values based on current dietary recommendations, amending the labeling requirements for foods specifically for children under the age of 4 years and pregnant women and lactating women, revising the format and appearance of the Nutrition Facts panel, amending the definition of single-serving container, and updating reference amounts customarily consumed.
