Children Beware: Kosher Companies Sneaking Healthy Ingredients into Food
by Raquel Mlabassati, Associate Feature Editor
New York – It is no secret that parents who keep kosher have joined the national movement to get kids to eat healthier. But keeping children away from junk food is no easy task especially since kosher options have expanded dramatically with snack aisles increasing by more than 100% in just the last three years. One company that does not hide its intention and should be pretty clear by the name is The Sneaky Chef, owned by Missy Chase Lapine. She is best known as the creator of the Sneaky Chef book series and has successfully managed to disguise vegetables in kids’ favorite meals so they can’t see or taste the difference! It all started with a desire to build up the vegetable tolerance in kids meals (and yes even adults), so Missy started sneaking in vegetables to get her kids to eat them without them realizing. She then went on and wrote The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids’ Favorite Meals. Missy saw there was a great desire and need for products that can help moms improve their children’s health. She was further encouraged by the success of her new books, and huge fan base. So she moved on to the next step when she developed The Sneaky Chef Foods, a line of packaged foods that improve children’s health by helping moms easily feed their kids the fruit and veggies they need in the foods they already love.
The Sneaky Chef line includes pasta sauce and no-nut butters, all non GMO ingredients. The sauce is great on its own, or can be built up in other recipes. The best part is that no kid can taste or see the 8 infused veggies added, so everyone is happy! The newest of The Sneaky Chef line is their Creamy No-Nut Butter made from golden peas. It’s a delicious peanut butter alternative, without a trace of peanuts, tree nuts, seeds, or soy. It comes in chocolate as well. This is a great option for those allergic to nuts or soy; they’ve got all the taste of peanut butter -without the peanuts. New on the horizon are The Sneaky Chef Grab & Go No-Nut Butter, and the Uncrustable PB&J sandwich. These are great for on the go snacking, and fits great in kid’s lunch boxes and in nut-free schools. The Sneaky Chef can be found at Fairway, and coming soon to Target and Wal-Mart. This may very well be the forerunner to many new kosher foods that camouflage the taste with healthier ingredients.
