NYC PASSES LAW REQUIRING CHAIN RESTAURANTS TO LIST SALT CONTENT

The New York City Board of Health voted to require chain restaurants with 15 or more locations to label menu items that exceed the daily recommended limit of 2,300 milligrams of salt.

This makes New York City the first U.S. city to pass such a law.

The saltshaker label will apply to about 10 percent of menu items in about one-third of the city’s restaurants that are required to comply. Health experts support the regulation, saying Americans consume too much sodium. But food industry officials are opposed.

Lori Roman, president of the Salt Institute, says the policy is “based on outdated, incorrect sodium guidelines.”

Restaurant owners are also worried that with so many menu regulations coming from the Board of Health, after they update their menus with the sodium labels, there will be another change right around the corner, reports Time
