HONEY AND APPLES…..

FROM KOSHER TODAY

Dip the Apple into 100 Different Kinds of Honey
By KT Staff Reporters

NEW YORK — The song many children sing on Rosh Hashanah may have to undergo change. “Dip the apple in the honey” may have to be changed to “dip the apple in many honeys.” One kosher food source told Kosher Today that he would guess that there are more than 100 different types of honey from flavored honeys to expensive gourmet honey.

At Pomegranate in Brooklyn, the very first display is of fancy bottles of honey and even honey packed in mini-barrels, selling for as much as $35 a bottle. Most kosher stores are offering the traditional honey jars but also the expensive honey bottles, some like in Pomegranate even as part of a fancy gift basket. Although there is plenty of honey cake on store shelves, retailers say that they have seen an unprecedented number of women buy the honey to make their own cakes. Some stores are also expanding the variety of apples offered to match their generous variety of honey. For a state like New York where both apples and honey is plentiful, Rosh Hashanah is a bonanza but all indications are that this year, the New Year will be sweeter than ever.
