GABRIEL RESTAURANT IN JERUSALEM

We have so far avoided writing about one last restaurant we visited in Israel while we were there in December visiting the kids. Why? Well, to put it simply we were so overwhelmed by the food, service and decor that we just couldn’t find the right words to convey our appreciation for the place.

The kids said, “Dad,we HAVE to go to Gabriel.” So, we went. It was amazing. Gabriel is everything that a restaurant should be. The food was five star. The service was 4 star. The decor was lovely. All in all, we had a magnificent dining experience. The food is essentially French fusion food. Vegetables are all incredibly fresh and all grown in Israel. Gabriel is proof positive that Jerusalem has come of age in the world of high class dining.
Our appetizer was foie gras. (Yes, we do eat it. We love it in fact!) This was served with a date sauce and covered with raisins and pistachios.Frankly, the foie gras was to die for.Daughter had the carrot soup- a most tasty soup, btw. The son in law had the eggplant with techina. He proclaimed it to be just perfect.
For dinner, we split a chateau briand with daughter Tali. It is meant to be a dinner for two and weighs in at 500 grams. Keep in mind, this is Israel. Rear quarter meat is served there. This was the real thing. Not the fake chateau briand they serve at Bar Mitzvah parties and which is simply the eye of the rib roast. This was a totally fine, soft as butter piece of rear quarter meat. It was taam gan eden. The wait staff sliced the meat at our table and gave us each one half of the meat. The meat was sweet and cooked perfectly to our taste. They offered us a choice of sauces for the meat. We chose the pomegranate sauce. The tartness of the sauce offset the meat nicely. So nicely, that we asked for more sauce as we ate and put it on bread, potatotes, veggies, etc. Yoav had the tornado rossini. This dish is filet mignon (rear quarter meat) covered with goose liver pate in a very delicate wine sauce.
This restaurant is not cheap. It is also not a place to go for a quick dinner. This is a meal to be savored and lingered over. This is an amazing treat on many levels. Some one in the kitchen is truly an artist- every plate is nicely arranged. The food is a Kosher Nexus Five Fork award winner.
Gabriel is located at 7 Shimon Ben Shetach Street in Jerusalem. 02 624 6444 Kashruth is by the rabbanut and the meat is glatt kosher. Truth be told, we have paid more and gotten much less. This was worth the price and then some!
