COCA COLA THE WAY IT USED TO BE

This week’s edition of Kosher Today had a nice article about Coke made with sugar. Seems people have caught on to the greatest secret of the Twentyfirst Century or something……..

But, before we comment, read the story in Kosher Today:

(New York) “You Don’t Have to Be Jewish to Love Passover Coca Cola.” Mercury News reporter L.A. Chung, professed that although not Jewish, he preferred the Passover version of Coke which uses sugar instead of the high fructose corn syrup.

This may seem strange to those who believe that the Passover Coke does not taste as good as the year-round version or those who swear that they cannot tell the difference. Many other consumers who are allergic to corn also stock up on the Passover beverage because they suffer severe allergic reactions to corn. Says Chung: “I could hold my head up among the foodies by pointing out that I was trying to avoid the `evil’ high fructose corn syrup found in practically every soft drink and `fruit’ drink today. It seemed a worthwhile endeavor.” Chung scoured many stores in San Jose but ended up finding his prize at the recently opened kosher Albertson’s in Los Altos. “We’re the main Passover Albertsons in Northern California,” store manager Aide Garcia said. It draws from as far away as Marin County, said Quyen Ha, Albertsons spokeswoman. Chung did a blind tasting in the newsroom he works in. He reported that a co-worker who stopped drinking Coke years ago put two identical cups through the test. “She swirled the cups and stuck her nose into them. She liked the Passover Coke better. So did I.” If Coke is looking for a potential new winner, perhaps its Passover version fits the tab.”

You might be shocked to know that there are groups of consumers all over the USA who search for so called real Coca Cola made with sugar all the time. In Mexico, Coke is still made with sugar. For the rest of us who do not live near the border, Passover is the time to stock up on Coke made with real sugar. Coke claims that the sugar costs too much and explains that that is why they do a limited Passover run. (What? As a courtesy??)

We are aware of user groups that light up the information highway every year with listings of where to go to stock up on Coke with real sugar. Now you know why it is often so hard to find Passover Coke- there is a whole slew of people out there looking for it also. They belong to clubs. They rhapsodize about Coke with sugar. They plunder the grocer’s shelves while you are sleeping!! They spread the word about the yellow cap with KP on it, or even with Hebrew letters on it. We don’t stand much of a chance. Good thing we only use Diet Coke in our house! Next year, start your search earlier! You, too, can be a member of the Real Coke Drinkers Society of your town.
