Located in Machaneh Yehuda on Agrippas St, Sammi’s is an institution. It is not in any way a palace of haut cuisine. Nope! Nor is it upscale. Nope again. It isn’t even fancy or schmancy. Nope, not even close.
But the food sure is good. Sammi’s is about as close as a restaurant can come to ‘down home cookin.’
Sammi’s is a classic Israeli Steakiah. They serve all the usual Israeli salads and grilled foods we all have come to love.
Our group of five enjoyed a buffet worthy of the table of Avraham Avinu. We started with:
baba ganouch, hummus, techina, purple cabbage salad, pickled carrots, cole slaw, peppers, olives, turkish salad, pickled onions, onions in tomato sauce, cabbage and onions, s’chug and probably three or four other dishes that no one can seem to remember with any degree of clarity.
Dinner was the usual: ful, chips, kubba, schwarma, schnitzel, kubba and rice. The pita plate got refilled three times. The water pitcher got refilled over and over. We emptied out the napkin dispenser. And we sure had a blast!
As we ate with much gusto, one of the owners came over to welcome his “hungry guests.” In fact, we are fairly sure that plates that we had not ordered appeared on the table as we ate. Seriously, every time we finished something, something else appeared in its place.
We were there for almost two hours. People came and people went, but we just ate on and on and on.
The food is very good. It is hearty and filling. It tastes great. What more can you ask for?
Yes, Sammi’s is not a fancy place. So, what do you want- good looks or good food? Sammi’s is great for when you are really hungry. It’s also good for when you are only regular hungry. Either way, it is worth the trip.
