CEREALS

Ever wonder what all the different kinds of cereal grains are? No, not us either. But because we have a list of cereals, pretend you are interested, and read along!

Amaranth: A South American, gluten free cereal, high in fiber.

Pearled Barley: A great singer. Oops. Sorry. A lightly milled barley containing most of the bran and all of the germ.

Buckwheat Groats: AKA Kasha! Not a grain at all, Kasha is the fruit of a relative of rhubarb.

Kamut: A form of wheat that comes from ancient Egypt. It has a unique taste. Many people who are glutten sensitive can eat Kamut even though it contains glutten.

Millet: What you feed your bird during Pesach. Millet is a glutten free, easily digestible grain.

Oats: A solid grain, oats has more fat than does wheat, but it is a great source of vitamin B, calcium and iron.

Quinoa: Tastes vaguely nutty. Contains no glutten. Can be used on Passover. So what’s bad?

Teff: Ya gotta love the name! Teff is from Ethiopia. It is a sweet and malty tasting grain.

Wheat: The mainstay of America. There is winter wheat and summer wheat. There’s shredded wheat and wheaties. Yup, we all know wheat.
