Some names just add to the confusion. So, here are a few terms and what they are:
Agar agar- made from seaweed, agar agar is a substitute for gelatin. It needs no hashgacha.
Catalese- Catalese is used as a coagulant, and it comes from cow liver. It obviously needs hashgacha.
Cholic Acid- needs hashgacha as it comes from animal bile. It is used as an emulsifier in dried egg whites. (MMMMMMMM!)
Oil of Rose- Always kosher, this is just what the name says it is. It is a distillate made from Bulgarian damask rose petals. BTW, this makes wonderful B”samim to use on your hands during prayer (a la Sefardim).
Tween/Span/Polysorbate 60/Polysorbate 65- needs hashgacha as it is a derivative of stearic acid. It is used as an emulsifier.
Brewers yeast, kelp and sea salt do not need hashgacha.
And finally, Enocianina is one of our fave food terms. Sounds exotic, no? Actually it is grape skin extract which is used for food coloring. It needs hashgacha.
