OILS WELL THAT ENDS WELL

Remember Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys? They were one of our fave groups. With hits such as “They ain’t makin Jews like Jesus anymore” and other western ditties, they were a most fascinating flash in the pan. Kinky became a big time, hot shot writer, and with the help of Don Imus has managed to keep his name in the news.

Now Kinky has a new project.

Together with Farouk Shami, the two offer Farouk and Friedman Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The oil is OU pareve. One hundred percent of the profits, by the way, go to children’s charities. Mr. Shami is a Palestinian who believes strongly in the notion of peace between Arab and Jew. To that end, he supports Oasis of Peace, and their school program, School of Peace- a program that recruits both Palestinian and Israeli teens and teaches them conflict resolution, mutual respect and cultural awareness.

The oil, by the way, claims to be from the “Holy Land.” It is cold pressed and is the first press (ie, the best).
