NEW YORK’S BEST BLACK AND WHITES

Sometimes the most outrageous stuff is found in little, out of the way places. On Staten Island, there is a bagel store and bakery that makes the very best black and whites in all the land. Chances are, if you are not a native of the tri-state area, you do not know what a black and white is. But if you do know, well then, the very best ones are found in this store on Staten Island.

The black and whites are large- about six inches across. The topping is fondant in both chocolate and plain flavors. The cookie is bowl shaped and is best eaten by breaking pieces off the whole cookie. Many people prefer to dunk their’s in coffee. Purists know that that is a heresy.

The store makes ruggelach to die for. The chocolate ruggies fairly fly out of the store. And the raspberry ones follow in a close second place. Both the ruggies and the B & W’s are pareve.

The store also makes some of the best hand rolled and kettled bagels in NY. Bagels here are hefty, weighing in at just over four ounces. Shiny and just a little hard on the outside, the inside is soft and tender. No boutique bagels here- just the usual NY bagel store bagels. They also make a lower carb bagel which is quite tasty.

One quirk of the owners is worth noting. Pareve products in the store are always labelled 100% pareve. As if there were any other kind of pareve!?

Heartland Bagels is located at 2311 Richmond Ave,
Staten Island, NY, 10314. The phone number there is 718 761 4829. Hashgacha is by some fellow named Rabbi Jeffrey Rappoport. People have been known to travel to the bagel store from northern Jersey and Manhattan. Try them- you’ll thank us!

Products in the store are not pas yisroel.
