A MATZAH TASTING

April 11, 2004 at 3:44:06p.m.

Ever wonder what things like oat or spelt matzah taste like?

Alexandra, one of my end-of-Pesach guests, reports that one of the highlights of her (Chabad) seder was a matzah-tasting. Yes, a matzah-tasting. Not different brands of shmurah (worthy of a rant in itself), but different types of shmurah. They had regular, whole wheat, spelt, oat, and rye. Her report:

Regular shmurah – “The same old classic stuff.”

Whole wheat – “A healthy alternative. It’s different, but still is practically as good as regular.”

Spelt – “Surprisingly tasty. It had a more distinctive flavor than regular shmurah, less bland.”

Oat – “This one tasted the most like cardboard. You could see the pain in the guests’ faces when they tried to eat a whole piece of it.”

Rye – “It tasted good, but the texture was enough to scare one off. It wasn’t smooth and flat; it was rough.”

There you have it!
