ORANGE YOU GLAD I DIDN’T SAY BANANA?

March 9, 2004 at 12:15:40a.m.

We recently had seudah shlishit at a friend’s house. Prominently displayed in the middle of the table was a salad the likes of which we had never seen. It was a cucumber and orange salad. We gotta tell you, it looked a tad strange, and the taste had to grow on us, but all in all, it was different and refreshing. Here is the recipe:

Orange and Cucumber Salad

3 cold oranges
1 cucumber
Salt to taste

Peel and separate the oranges into sections. Cut each section in half.

Slice the cucumber into approximately 1/4″ disks, then cut each disk in half (yielding relatively thick, half-moon-shaped pieces of cucumber).

Sprinkle a little salt over the top and toss the salad. Repeat until you have the amount of salt you want. Suggestion: you should be able to taste the salt only slightly. The salt should be a subtle taste – not a sledgehammer on the little toe!

As we said above, the taste kind of grew on us. We all agreed that it was a weird salad, but, hey, why not?

Enjoy.
