A New Year and Many New Wines for Every Budget

OXNARD, CA — As has become customary, Rosh Hashanah (begins on the eve of September 24th), is second only to Passover for new wine releases. Israeli newspapers report that some 20 new wines will be on the market this holiday season. For the first time in nearly 10 years, Herzog Wine Cellars will be releasing a series of three wines centered exclusively on California Cabernet Sauvignon.

“In effect, we have created a Cabernet Sauvignon that really speaks to the versatility of the varietal,” says Joseph Herzog, Operations director at Herzog Wine Cellars. He adds: “Since we are working to represent variations of the Californian microclimates, we spend a lot of time running up and down the state; scouting out fruit, identifying various flavor profiles and presenting them in a way that celebrates the regions and the diversity of the varietal itself.” The new wines come at a time when a massive earthquake hit Napa Valley but a spokesman for the Kedem Wine Group said that its magnificent winery and the growers who supply it were not affected.

In other wine news, New York authorities will allow wineries to buy grapes and juice from out of state to make up for shortages after a harvest expected to be well below normal because of last winter’s harsh weather. Stores like Trader Joe’s and many supermarkets across the country (where wine can be sold in supermarkets) are offering a large variety of kosher wines at every price. At Trader Joe’s some Spanish kosher wines were selling for as low as $4.99. Thus, irrespective of budget the market was saturated with kosher wines for the upcoming holidays.
