Andrea’s Challah

Ever wanted to bake the most delicious, soft, moist challah, but just didn’t know which recipe to use? Fret no longer, here’s a great challah recipe.

Andrea’s Bread Machine Challah Recipe

Put these ingredients into your bread machine (I use a 2 lb capacity machine) in this order:

1 Cup warm water
2 tsp. jarred yeast (regular or bread machine)
1/2 Cup sugar
1/2 Cup oil (I use canola)
2 tsp. salt
2 whole eggs
4 Cups bread flour

Run the machine on the dough cycle. Let the dough rise once in the machine. Take it out of the machine and put into a lightly oiled glass bowl. Cover with towel and let rise once more. (About 45 mins to 1 hour at the least.)

Punch down the dough. This recipe is small enough that you do not have to “take challah”. But, if you make two loads of dough (like we do) you need to “take challah”. Ok, after punching down the dough, separate into two balls. Each ball will make one 1 lb loaf of challah. You can three or four braid, whichever you prefer.

For those that like a larger loaf or want more challah, you can make two loads of challah dough and make three challot from the combination of the two loads.

After forming the challah, glaze with an egg beaten with a touch of water. Sprinkle on your favorite seeds (sesame or poppy) and bake at 325 degrees for approximately 40 to 45 minutes, until golden brown and when you thump the bread it has a bit of a hollow sound to it.
