BOUTIQUE MILKS

Small dairy farmers have been plagued by staggering losses due to the low prices they receive from their milk co-ops. Now, some have found a way to fight back and even flourish.

The newest thing in milk is also the oldest. Do you remember opening the door as a kid and taking in the cold, fresh milk? Remember the original pogs we used to play with from the milk lids? Well, once again you can!

All over the country, small dairy farms are sending fresh milk in bottles to the local markets. The bottles carry legends such as: “The world’s freshest milk.”

The milk tends to be much fresher than the regular fare sold in supermarkets. The milk, say some, also tastes better, too.

Of course, all of this comes at a premium price! Consumers, it seems, are willing to pay higher prices for milk they perceive to be fresher and better. And of course, the farmers are ready to meet the demand. One small producer in NYS, recently increased his herd of cows from 80 to 160 animals- the demand for his product has been that high.

Of course, as boutique brands grow and prosper, watch for flavored milks to appear, too. One dairy already sells orange flavored milk and root beer flavored milk. Why root beer we don’t know, but it seems to sell.

Watch for milk from truly contented cows in a store near you!
