GEFILTE SHRIMP??? HOW THE MIGHTY ARE FALLEN!

Traditionally Eastern European Rosh Hashana dish undergoes un-kosher transformation. Primarily carp gefilte fish to be replaced with calamari, mussels and crabs

Inhabitants of the old Jewish towns in Eastern Europe would definitely turn in their graves especially after this new Rosh Hasahana innovation: Gefilte fish made of blended seafood.

Over the years, the traditional fish patty has gone through various transformations. The poorer Eastern European families tended to blend river fish that they themselves caught near their homes.

In the 1950s, the Gefilte fish was mostly made from carp, a cheap and fatty fish sold to the nation at a subsidized cost.

Today, even Sephardic families serve Gefilte fish on their holiday tables and use various types of fish, but the traditional ingredient of sugar is replaced by bolder, spicier flavors.

Nowadays, it turns out that more and more people are preparing the classic Jewish dish in a trendy, non-kosher version.

The Tiv Taam supermarket chain reported that in the last few days they have received requests by consumers to grind seafood for their Gefilte-preparation purposes.

“I admit that the request seemed strange to me at first,” said Haim Bracha who is in charge of fish and seafood at the grocery store.

“But, when the requests repeated themselves we asked ourselves ‘why not’ and decided to take the initiative.”

The supermarket will allow customers to grind seafood like shrimp, calamari, mussels and crabs and the pricing will be by weight and in accordance with the contents of the fishy mix.
