NEW TAKE-OUT IN QUEENS

September 30th, 2005

  Category: Restaurants

There is a new take out store in Queens and it promises to be a huge hit if early tastings are any indication.

A and A GOURMET is located at 188-09 Union Tpk (between 188 and 189) in Queens. Certification is by the Queens Vaad.

The phone number is 718 468 0903. The food is glatt kosher, of course.

We were there a few times this week tasting foods that would find their way into the display case. And frankly, everything we tasted has been taam gan eden!

Tonight we polished off a full pound of sweet and sour zucchini. With no sugar, it is a dieter’s delight. But even better, it is so good that everyone will love it. We had the mushroom and barley and it was the best we have ever had. The potato kugel was light, white, and fluffy. It tasted like real, old fashioned, made by my Bubba potato kugel!

The liver and onions (chicken livers) were tempting us, so we finally gave in and tasted a bit. We sure were glad that we did.

The store opened today with no advertizing and no advance notice. When we got there, the store was busy and the general buzz was good.

What was amazing was that people came in and said that they had gotten a call or they heard from a neighbor, etc that the store was open and they wanted to come in and check it out. Across the street at the fruit store, the lady there was busy phoning her friends with the good news.

A and A GOURMET is sure to be a huge hit. We can’t wait to go back there and try more stuff. We wish the owners much mazal and success.

Check it out- you will bless us!!

PRALINE KUGEL

September 29th, 2005

  Category: Recipes

Here is a really superlative kugel recipe we found on Epicurious. Our family loves this kugel, and we serve it quite often. Hot or cold, this is sure to be a hit for you, too!

NORTH SHORE CHICAGO HADASSAH’S LICK-YOUR-FINGERS KUGEL

This is definitely American ? with dark brown sugar and pecans! Your guests will love it.
1 1/2 sticks (3/4 cup) salted butter or margarine
3/4 cup dark brown sugar
1 cup pecans, halved
1 pound wide noodles
4 large eggs
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup sugar
2 teaspoons salt
1. Melt half the butter in a 12-cup mold or tube pan. Swirl it around the bottom and up the sides.
2. Press the brown sugar into the bottom and press the pecans into the sugar.
3. Boil the noodles according to the package directions and then drain. Mix with the eggs, the remaining butter, melted, cinnamon, sugar, and salt and pour into the mold.
4. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until the top is brown. Let sit for 15 minutes before unmolding. The top will become slightly hard like a praline. Serve cold or at room temperature.

SOME NEW ITEMS

September 27th, 2005

We are always amazed by the ever-growing depth of the Kosher market. These new products testify to that growing depth.

From CHEF BUTTER, comes
Ghee, Seafood Butter and Clarified Butter. All are OU-D certified. These butters contain no trans fats and are 100%pure and natural. In addition, they have a 12 month shelf life. Look them up on the web at www.ilovebutter.com

FUZE DIET GREEN TEA contains as much anti oxidant as three servings of veggies. It has zero calories, zero carbs, and zero sugars. Certification is OU. On the web, you can find them at
www.fuzebev.com

From STIRRINGS of Nantucket, comes Simple Peppermint. What is it? It is a liquid mix that you add to liquor to make cocktails. For example, the company suggests a peppermintini. Certification is by the OU. On the web, you can find them at
www.nantucketoffshore.com

Enjoy!

Chicken Tajine

September 26th, 2005

This is a unique and wonderful chicken dish. Great to serve for company. Make a nice rice pilaf or even plain white jasmine rice to go with it. Add a salad and you are good to go!

Chicken Tajine

2 lbs Kosher chicken breasts, cut into nice sized cubes — about 1-1/2 inch square

? Cup Fresh chopped Cilantro
? Cup Fresh chopped Parsley
3 garlic cloves
1 T Cumin
1 T Tumeric

Rub chicken with the above mixture (your skin will turn yellow from the Tumeric and will stay that way for a while! You can wear disposable gloves if you’d like).

In a roasting pan put:

1 Can diced tomatoes
some lemon juice and rind
chopped olives (black and green)
? C chicken broth.
The chicken that you rubbed with the spices.

Cook covered at 350 for about 45 mins to 1 hour. This recipe can be doubled or tripled very easily.
